Portfolio Management

I am almost in my final year for my bachelor’s degree in Finance. Last semester, I took Advance Finance, Bank Management, and International Business for my Finance related courses. This semester, I am taking only one course called Portfolio Management. This course is a pre-requisite for Derivatives Securities and Portfolio Management. I was going to take Portfolio Management last semester, but some of my friends advised me to take Advance Finance instead. I regret not taking Portfolio Management, since if I had taken it I would have been able to take my finance course Derivative Securities and Portfolio Management. The course has a prerequisite and I took it in the Summer of last year, and is Securities Analysis and Valuation.

Portfolio Management covers recent developments in futures and options, analysis and management of financial portfolios, principles of valuation of options and futures investments and brief review of empirical evidence. The course is concerned with the characteristics and analysis of individual securities as well as with the theory and practice of optimally combining them into portfolios. Portfolio Management will focus on modern portfolio analysis and show how the characteristics of portfolio are significantly different from those of the securities from which they are formed. Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Arbitrage Pricing Model (APT) will also be looked into. The course would provide tools to manage investment risks, detect misprice securities, minimize taxes, and measure the performance of investment managers. For this course, I will be using the textbook Modern Investment Theory, 5th Edition by Robert A. Haugen, I wonder how many hundred dollars this book costs. As usual a Wall Street Journal is recommended.

I haven’t even bought the book yet, and the class is weekly. To tell you the truth, I am looking forward to this class, as it will enable me to offer you “viewers” a better Financial Analysis of Corporations in the future, as it’s a good measure to master all the broad knowledge of finance. I have to say that my financial securities class was one of my favorites and hopefully this class doesn’t bore me out.
