I hope all of you by now know that Microsoft has officially released its Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System. The OS went officially live on midnight of January 30. I haven’t seen any commercials of Windows Vista on TV, and I am pretty sure Microsoft has aired commercials for its most important software, literally the flagship product of Microsoft.
I don’t think a lot of people are going to line up to buy Vista. I think there are too many headaches associated with it. Right now, I use Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop, and I think I bought it a few months back. When Vista was in beta 2 that was the first time I had it installed on my computer. The computer came with only 256MB, so I had to have it upgraded to 1GB (I had to fork out an additional $100 – so much for my hopes of having a budget laptop). After, I had the memory installed (which is always a mess); I was all green for installing Windows Vista. My computer checked out, and it had met the minimum requirements for installing Windows Vista.
The installation was the easy part, but it was the part after that which was complete hell. One of my audio drivers wouldn’t install properly even though it was Vista Signed. Whenever my computer went to standby, I would lose my audio. So, if I wanted to listen to any music songs, and the computer went to standby – I had to restart the computer to listen to anything. To me, this was OK, as it was still in beta. But what annoyed me was the fact the fact that the first 3 days, the computer would just restart automatically no reason. I think that each time it restarted, it crashed. Now, this was when I moved from Windows Vista Beta 2 to Release Candidate 1. Sometimes, it would shut down, and when it is restarting it would just show blank screen – and that’s’ it. I was forced to cold shut down my computer many times. That problem was resolved after a week; I believe that Microsoft released some sort of patch or an update. Ever since then, I haven’t had my computer going cold turkey on me.
I consider myself to be an advanced computer user; I think I know my way around PC’s pretty well. I am not sure, how regular folks would look kindly to bugs in Microsoft OS. From news reports I am reading, it will take at least a month or 2 after Vista is released for all the bugs to fixed. I also don’t think most people are really into installing a new operating system. Most people don’t even want to install something on their computer, let along an Operating System. As is expected, users will first get their experience on Windows Vista when they are buying a new computer rather than upgrading their Operating System. There is just too much involved in upgrading Vista, and I for one am absolutely sure, regular Internet surfers have no patience or time to upgrade to a new OS
