Rising Gas Prices and Life Style Changes
Because of rising gas prices, I think we can expect some changes in our lifestyle. Right now we are complaining that gas prices are already too high at $4, but consumers in Europe apparently pay $8 or even $10. Most of the high price is due to the taxes.
Now, what would happen if gas prices hit $8 in United States? Now, I am don't think it will be some sort of doomsday scenario, I think we can look at Europe at what our possible future will be. High gas prices may force us to move out of suburbs and move into cities, or closer to work areas. A lot of people are accustomed to commuting long distance, and high gas prices will definitely force people to move.
People are also accustomed to driving large cars, and like Europe we too would be forced to change the kinds of cars we drive. Small cars would be the increasing norm, and SUVs would probably fall out of favor. I personally would welcome this development, although, I would love to have an SUV that gives a mileage of a small car. If there is such an SUV, I would have no problem abandoning my Honda Civic.
Diesels might also be more prevalent. I don't really know much about diesel cars to comment on them, but apparently there are many cleaner diesel cars.
I am personally hoping that Chevy comes with Volt as soon as possible. Chevy Volt being electric powered instead of gasoline powered would definitely be a welcome step. In fact, when Chevy Volt does come out, I will line up to be one of the first to buy the car. I just hope they don't take forever to bring that vehicle out. We should also strongly encourage public transportation, mass rail transportation would be a good alternative to air travel. New high speed trains like MAGLEV Trains would somewhat bridge the gap of time difference between air travel and rail transportation. Although implementing these projects is expensive, the returns from these projects would be immeasurable.
