I had to do a presentation on Effects of Global Warming in my Communications class in 2004. I have decided to add the outline on which I did the presentation. Although the outline is old, I still believe it is relevant.
Topic: Global Warming General Purpose: To inform students of the effects of global warming. Specific Purpose: What causes global warming and what are its affects. Thesis: Global Warming doesn’t mean that the world gets warmer.Introduction
I. Global Warming is a very real phenomenon.
II. Global Warming is a very important topic as our actions can have a serious impact on the future generations. What we do today, can lead to a better or worse future for the coming generations.
III. Global Warming doesn’t necessarily mean that the world gets warmer.
IV. Global Warming is something that is happening every day and can have a huge impact on future generations and ours.Body
I. What is Global Warming?
A. Increase in earth’s temperature due to increased use of fossil fuels, industrial wastes, and agricultural process.
1. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the mean surface temperature of the earth has increased by about 1.1º F (0.6°Celsius).2. Over the last 40 years, which is the period with most reliable data, the temperature increased by about 0.5 º F (0.2-0.3°Celsius).
3. Warming in the 20th century is greater than at any time during the past 400-600 years.
4. Seven of the ten warmest years in the 20th century occurred in the 1990s. 1998, with global temperatures spiking due to one of the strongest El Niños on record, was the hottest year since reliable instrumental temperature measurements began.
Transition: Build up of “Green house” gases is responsible for causing Global Warming.II. In order to meet our daily energy requirements we burn a lot of fossil fuels like coal or petroleum.
A. Coal is one of the most used fossil fuels.
1. We use coal to for domestic fires, electrical generation, iron and steel production.
2. We also use coal in chemical industries, gas production, engineering, railways, shipping and other industries.
B. Gasoline is also a very important natural resource.
1. We use gasoline for farming purposes.
2. We also use gasoline for aviation fuel, and for road transportation.
Transition: Because our activities reached to such an extent that it is now affecting our climate.
III. Global Warming can have serious consequences for our atmosphere.
A. Major shift in climatic zones.
1. Loss of mountain and coastal-wetland habitats.
2. Expansion of deserts.
3. Rise in sea level of anywhere from 6 to 37.5 inches above the current level.
4. Flooding.
5. Disruption of agriculture.
Transition: What is being done about Global Warming?
IV. Action is occurring at every level to reduce, to avoid, and to better understand the risks of Global Warming.
A. On national level, EPA and other federal agencies are actively engaging the private sector, states, and localities to address Global Warming problem.
B. On international level, countries around the world have expressed a firm commitment to strengthening international responses to the risks of climate change.
Transition: What can we do about Global Warming?
V. We can cut back on our daily energy usage and conserve energy.
A. Remove items that use unnecessary amounts of energy.
B. Buy hybrid vehicles.
C. Raise awareness of the need for action on Global Warming.
D. Support stopping of clear-cutting of valuable forests.
E. Support new renewable energy technologies.
VI. Conclusion
A. Global Warming is real.
B. It is a serious problem that has to be addressed.
C. Education of the mainstream society regarding the consequences of global warming is the first step in curbing the problem
D. There are solutions that can help reduce Global Warming, and we can be a part of it.
