No, This is NOT real news, but rather one of my class assignments for English Class. I was supposed to write a FALSE break news. So, please don't Panic or anything. The paper is basically my views on regime change, the success of democracy around the world. The paper was written in April of 2005 and forecasts a coup in the near future!

Iraqi Government Overthrown in a Military Coup

In what could be described as one of the bloodiest coups, disgruntled members of Iraqi Armed forces have overthrown the 2-year-old Iraqi democracy citing corruption and incapability of the civilian government to solve economic problems.

Now, that kind of headlines did scare you didn’t it? Well it won’t be long before that actually becomes a reality. Iraq’s fate is either that it reverts to its old dictatorship, or is run like a theocracy. The fact is that even is inevitable.
It has been about 3 months since the Iraqi elections, and it now appears the memory of Iraq has slowly begun to fade away. It won’t be too long when Iraq will seem as a far away place, and all the sacrifices will be all but forgotten.
But looking at how successful we have been in putting democracies around the world, I don’t think it would be too long for another war of Liberation in Iraq. We have been doing this liberation of people continuously, and we never ever seem to be tired of it. We have done this in Iraq, tried it in Vietnam, Cambodia, South America, and Afghanistan and most probably we will do it all over again. It just appears that in order for a country to have a democracy you need to invade them multiple times, and each time hope that they would be a successful.
Unfortunately, the saddest thing is that each time we do the same mistake and we still think what was done was right and justified. Even worse, we refuse to look at other alternatives. Is it right to invade a country numerous times just so that it can have a democracy? What about the lives of the soldiers who are dying in this fruitless cause? Are their deaths justified? Is it right for a mother to see her son’s body riddled with bullets and mutilated? Is it right for a 2 year old to die in crossfire between “militants” and “liberators”?
If you still think it is right, I can’t do anything about it but I sure will hope that each time we invade a country at least we do something different. Aren’t you tired of installing a democracy in the same country over and over again? If democracies were so great, why do we need to put a democracy in a nation? It doesn’t make any sense to forcibly install democracy in a country on people who don’t even want it.
It is time that we let people be how they were. If they were under dictatorship, let them be under dictatorship. If democracy was such a great form of government, people will replace it. You don’t need to take over a country and forcibly change their government to have a democracy.
Unfortunately, since we are in the business of changing governments here is my advice: Instead of going the conventional way of path to democracy, I suggest that we actually install a “benevolent dictatorship”. A perfect example is Singapore. Singapore is a dictatorship, but by far the most successful governments on earth. It is also one of the most prosperous nations in the world. Although Singaporean Dictatorship is in no way benevolent, it sure gives an alternative to the endless cycle of invasions that we are doing.
So, the next time we are invading Iraq, Syria, or our Axis of Evil, lets not just rush in and replace their government with democracy. Let us think for a Second!
