Porting Cell Phone Number From One Carrier to Another

Well, porting numbers these days is common, and you can even port your land line number. I looked up a few logs of my website, and it seemed a lot of searches were made regarding porting, and my article on Sprint Sero got a lot of interested viewers as I talked about porting my cell phone number from Sprint to AT&T, and then back to Sprint.

In that article I casually mentioned porting numbers, and in this article, I will talk about a little bit more about porting (from what I remember). So, this article just give a heads up to those who never ported or transferred their cellphone from one carrier to another.

I ported my phone number only in cell phone carriers, so I don't know the exact procedure on how to port the number between landlines, or landlines to cell phones, but I do recall my Mom talking about switching from Vonage to Comcast Digital Voice, and how we could keep the same land line number.

When you port or transfer a number from one carrier to other, your account at the old carrier gets closed or canceled. So, be sure when you are about to order, as the moment you order, the process of porting your phone number beings, and your old account will get canceled. Before I ordered my AT&T Gophone, I logged into my old Sprint Account, downloaded the latest bill, and paid off any existing bill or fees. With the Sprint Account Number and password in hand ( you should have it with you), I ordered my AT&T Go Phone, and when asked if I wanted a new phone number or port an existing phone number, I chose Transfer my old number. I put in my cell phone number, and then It asked me for account details of my old account. I provided the account details, and the order was done and processed. The next day, I received my new (refurbished) AT&T Go Phone, and activated it, and voila, I had my old cellular phone number transferred from Sprint to AT&T. I do want to remind people that when I activated my AT&T Go Phone, I kinda messed up the activation, as I wasn't aware of activation rules for transferring phones, and I ended up activating a new line. I had to call the customer service, and get a new SIM card and then correctly activated my cell phone with my existing phone number. So, do check up on the activation rules. The procedure for porting the phone number between AT&T and Sprint is just the same, just make sure you pay off any bills, get the account number and login details, and then order a new phone.

Just to make sure that my account was canceled after I ported my cell phone from Sprint to AT&T, I called up Sprint Customer Service, and they confirmed my account cancellation. So, I didn't even have to cancel my account, the moment you port your phone number, your account gets canceled. On an additional note, be sure that you are Out of Contract, otherwise you will get hit with an Early Termination Fee (ETF), and none of us want that.
